Mr. William Lee Jr.

On November 21, 1934, William “Bill” Warren Lee Jr., affectionately known as “Poppy,” was born in Augusta, Georgia to Marietta and William Lee Sr; and his Aunt Edna made a significant impact on Bill’s formative and teen years. Bill was a remarkable man who served the Lord, with a multifaceted legacy woven with threads of service, skill, a unique sense of humor, and a deep commitment to family. His journey began at Mt. Clemens High School, where he emerged as a celebrated athlete in football and track, showcasing not only physical strength but also a determination that would become a hallmark of his character. He was also a family historian who would provide the family with a book filled with generational timelines. His professional journey began while in the Army, where he selflessly served his country, embodying principles of honor and duty that he carried throughout his life. While in the Army, Bill demonstrated exceptional skills as a sharpshooter, exemplifying his commitment to duty, precision, and leadership. These experiences further shaped Bill's character, instilling in him values of discipline, responsibility, and trust. He then continued to serve at Army Tank Automotive Command for 35 years, where he held a managerial position. Bill was trained as a skilled electrician, mechanic, and carpenter. His versatility and expertise in these trades added to the richness of his character and the contributions he made to both his family and his community. His commitment to excellence and leadership extended beyond the military as he also contributed to the automotive and air force industry, working at Chrysler and Selfridge. Beyond his military achievements and athletic prowess, Bill was an avid bowler, finding joy and camaraderie in the lanes. His passion for bowling extended beyond personal enjoyment; he bowled three perfect 300 games, a remarkable feat that highlighted his skill and dedication to the sport. As he excelled on the lanes, he also took pride in showcasing his bowling rings as symbols of his achievements. Bill also took on the role of treasurer of the Motor City Bowlers Guild, where he played a pivotal role in giving out scholarships, embodying a spirit of generosity and support for the educational pursuits of aspiring college students. Bill and Myrtle’s home became the cherished meeting place for every holiday, a hub of warmth and festivity where relatives gathered to celebrate and create lasting traditions. Their home was not just a physical space but a sanctuary of love, laughter, shared moments, and intense card games that brought the family together in friendly competition and camaraderie. Today, as we bid farewell to William Lee, we reflect on a life that was a rich tapestry of duty, craftsmanship, laughter, familial love, athletic achievement, military service, and his community involvement.
