The Life Of Sallie King: On a beautiful summer day in Montgomery, Alabama, Abraham Carter met a young and beautiful Betty Darby. From this union their first two children were born, Henry and Mary. Later, on April 1, 1919 the Carters welcomed twins, a tiny but strong baby girl, Sallie Carter. Sallie was affectionately called “Little Sallie” by her big brother Henry and all of the siblings to follow. Sadly, Little Sallie's twin brother Thomas, was not strong enough and died in infancy. This was the beginning of what Little Sallie would always be—a tiny person with a big spirit. The Carters were a loving family and produced a total of 15 children, four sets of twins, and seven single births. Unfortunately, 12 of Sallie's siblings preceded her in death. In 1937 Sallie married Robert Taylor into this union two children were born, Margaret Taylor McKinney and Mary Lee. Mary Lee died in early childhood. In 1940 big spirited Little Sallie left Alabama to seek her fortunes in the North. Sallie came to Detroit, Michigan in 1943 and worked at the Book Cadillac Hotel and was known for her strong work ethic. In 1949 she met and married Albert King who preceded her in death in 1984. They raised ten children together happily. Sallie was a mother to all. Everyone knew that 4539 Oregon was opened to all. She raised not only her own children and grandchildren, but also helped raise the neighborhood children. Sallie also adopted one of her children's longtime friends Toni Frazier who is still around 45 years later. Everyone knew how big Sallie's heart was, her love and generosity was unconditional. Sallie was also a five star cook. God probably called her home just to have her make some homemade biscuits or perhaps her potato salad that Channel 4 News Station recognized as one of “Detroit's Best.” Regardless of how delectable Sallie's cooking was, she was a health zealot, which is no doubt the reason for her longevity. Sallie lectured on the benefits of good health and pointed out to all that she took no medication because of her healthy diet and exercise regimen. Anyone that knew her can attest to the fact that one of her favorite things to say while cutting the fat off of neck bones with surgical precision was, “You got to cut the fat off, that fat will kill you.” Sallie departed this life on Thursday, October 30, 2014.
