Matthew Grant Sr.

Matthew Grant Sr. was born December 29, 1982, in Gretna, VA to union Frank and Anniedoll Grant Sr. Matthew was the eighth of 10 children born to this union. Matthew graduated from Detroit Northern High School in 2001. He received a Mathematical Engineering scholarship to Wayne State University, but Matthew chose to peruse his passion as an entrepreneur in Roofing and Residential Construction. Upon graduating high school, Matthew joined his brothers Isaac and Daniel in establishing Substantial Construction, specializing in roofing. Because of his love for basketball and children, he decided to become a coach and mentor with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) for The Ballin Right Warriors in 2012-2014, and for the Jr. Pros in 2021. Matthew, a math wizard, was often called upon, by family and friends, to solve complex mathematical equations and problems. Matthew revealed his genius in theology, history, politics, and sports, as he expounded upon these topics. Matthew had a love for grilling and took joy in hosting family barbecues. His nieces and nephews reminisce of the times when he made them feel special by considering their dietary preferences, and have stated “who’s going to grill for us now?” Matthew embodied a true spirit of love, laughter, and zest for life. Matthew’s presence never possessed a dull moment. Matthew was always positive, taking full advantage of his charisma, making others smile. In times of conflict he used finesse to de-escalate tension with, “I love you”. Matthew was preceded in death by mother-Anniedoll Grant, father-Frank Grant Sr., sister- Naomi Grant-Tyler, and brother-Daniel Grant. Matthew is survived by: three children, Meah, Miah, Matthew Jr., and their mother, Shavonne Grant of Detroit, MI, Stepmother-Deborah Grant of Detroit, MI, Siblings-Sarah Ann Grant-Kidd (Derek) of Lawrenceville, GA, Frank Grant II (Akechia) of Rosholt, SD, Francesse Grant of Germantown, MD, Isaac Grant Sr. of Detroit, MI, Rebecca Grant of West Bloomfield, MI, Priscilla Williams (Wayne) of Collierville, TN, and Andrew Grant of West Bloomfield, MI, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
