Dr. Harrison B. Muyia

Celebrating A Life Well Lived, Dr. Harrison B. Muyia: Dr. Harrison Bwire “Mwalimu” passed away October 16, 2016 at his home in Detroit after a long illness. Harrison was born February 18, 1934 in Kakamega, Kenya to Hosea Muyia and Jennifer Mukolwe who preceded him in death. He was husband to Emma Bwire of Kenya and later to Lillian Fife of Muskegon, Michigan. Both preceded him in death. He was the beloved father of Eric Muyia and stepfather to James Etemesi. Brother of Dorcas Wakhungu, Jackson Inganga, the late Florence Jocoyange, Agneta Ambundo, Veronica Lubanga, the late Osore Muyia, Javan, Lydia, Stanley and Ruth. Father-in-law to Janet Muyia and Elizabeth Muhonja. Grandfather to Felesia Odada, Dr. Robert Mandela, Evans Muyia, Edna Muyia, Joseph, Emmie and Stephen. Great grandfather to Sheena and Tevin. Harrison was a professor of Political Science at Wayne County Community College, taught at Wayne State University and worked at the United Nations for a year. He was former president of Local AF Teachers Union, board member of Take Heart Association Project, Inc (THAP), and a leader in the Kenyan Community in Detroit. Harrison has the distinction of being the first Kenyan student to come to Detroit. He was part of the first airlift in the Student Exchange Program initiated by President John F. Kennedy and supported by Tom Mboya. In Kenya, he attended Butere Primary, Intermediate schools, and Kakamega High School. In the USA, he attended Wayne State University where he earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees. He later obtained his PHD in Political Science from University of Michigan specializing in International and Industrial Relations. Harrison was a great Wolverines fan and actually owned annual passes to the U of M football games. He was an expert in many card and board games and please don’t telephone him when Jeopardy is on TV. He was a terrific soccer player and of course, Harrison loved politics and so much wanted to see Hillary win as he was “With Her” all the way! God has you in His keeping, we have you in our hearts.
