Ms. Rena Calhoun

April 1, 1956 - January 18, 2022

In Loving Memory Of: Rena Calhoun born on April 1, 1956 in Detroit, Michigan to the late George and Helen Calhoun. She was the third oldest of nine siblings. Rena accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at First Union Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. E. J. Maye. Rena served in various departments in the church such as: the #2 Usher Board, Youth Department, Junior Choir, Inspirational Choir, the Mass and Community Choirs. Rena loved quartet singing, she often listened to the Christianaires, Canton Spirituals, and Doc McKenzie and the Gospel Highlights. Rena had her (10) ten minutes of fame when she sang with Detroit's own Heavenly Stars. Rena later joined Jordan Grove Baptist Church under the later leadership of her brother, the late Pastor George Calhoun Jr. where she served on the Pastor's Aide, Nurses Guild and the Culinary Committee. Rena was educated in the Detroit Public School system. She attended Thomas Elementary, Greusel Jr. High and Northeastern High School. Rena later went on to attend the skills trade automotive program where she graduated at the top of her class as a certified welder. Rena also attended Maurico's and Alma Beauty College where she studied cosmetology. Rena was skilled in many different trades such as hospitality, cooking, bartending and waitressing. She was employed with Dura-Lastics, Day's Inn, the Rhino Restaurant and Big Boys. Rena was later gainfully employed with Ford Motor Company where she utilized her skills trade in welding until her retirement. Rena enjoyed playing dominoes, bid whist, keno, and shooting pool with family and friends. She was also skillful in painting. She was fortunate enough to have painted several buildings in downtown Detroit. Rena departed this life on January 18, 2022 at 1:05am. Her father and mother George and Helen, sisters Connie, Johnetta and Vanessa, one brother George Jr. all preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories: three beautiful children Kendra (Kita Boo), Lawrence (Kayontay) and Stacey; ten grandchildren Jessica, David, Breeman, Bryson, Da'Shaun, Daveion, Leon, Keion, Kayontay, Akira, Trevion; four great-grandchildren Jayden, Dionna, Dah'lani, Genisis; a dedicated special friend and soulmate Marvin Ford; siblings Shelia (Gregory Akers, Cynthia, Cassandra (Dwayne) Flowers, Delano, Lechia, Renee (Robert) King, Dorothy; stepmother Alta; sister-in-law Nakita; godsister Natasha; three godchildren Savaughn, Gerald and Shafton; two special cousins Bernice and Johnnie Mae, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
