Mrs. Sylvia Dawes

Celebrating the Life of Sylvia Dawes: Sylvia Dawes was born on September 29, 1928 in Junction City, Arkansas, to Cade Thompson and Maggie Sue Beaver. From this union, she was the firstborn of eight children. She is survived by four remaining sisters, Myree Brown, OIlie Moore, Lillie Murphy and Daisy Johnson, affectionately known as 'The Sisters." Versie Easter, Isabelle Thompson and Cora Fox preceded her in death. Sylvia began perfecting her skills from an early age, learning to cook by 6 years old. She leaves a longing among family and friends for her famous rolls. She also developed her skills as a seamstress making her work sought after. She laid the foundation for her life's journey and in 1953 led the way for her family to relocate to Michigan. Here she pursued life with a spirit of perseverance and God by her side. Sylvia met the love of her life Cyril Dawes (precedes her in death) and in October 1955 they married. The union produced Nancy Elaine Dawes. Joining a blended family she opened her heart and home to her stepchildren, Alphanso Dawes and Theresa Dawes. Together, Sylvia and Cyril built a life of continuous progression shielded in wisdom, unconditional love and unwavering faith. Growing up in their home, their granddaughter, Nikkia Jones, saw the fundamental values of Sylvia's life implemented throughout the times shared together. Sylvia took her first step with Christ at El Bethel Baptist Church in Arkansas. After moving to Michigan, she joined Peace Baptist church in 1956 and served as the President of Usher Board #2. She transitioned church homes to New Bethel Baptist Church in 1980. There she worked in her faith, volunteering at the clothing drive and was called on by the church, family and friends to be a Prayer Warrior. In 1968, she was employed with Detroit Osteopathic Hospital where she worked diligently in the Dietary Department, serving for 22 years until she retired in 1990. After retirement, Sylvia continued sewing and creating fashionable styles for others. In later life, she spent many hours keeping in contact with family and friends, imparting her wisdom and brass sense of humor. She enjoyed travelling and was ready to go with family whenever someone said "Let's go." Her strong spiritual life carried her through by commitment to faith and devotion to family.
