Mrs. Pearline Colton

Pearline's Story: Pearline Colton was born November 8, 1925 to the union of the late Levella and Benjamin Franklin Woods in Turkey Scratch, Arkansas. She was the second of four children born to that union of whom three preceded her in death, Luther Woods, Bennie Woods Jr, and Celestine Carter. Two half brothers also preceded her in death, Calvin & Clifton Henley. She is also preceded in death by her son Kenneth Louis Colton and daughter Phyllis Louise Tucker. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters Celestine Colton and Wanda Scipio (Sam) a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, neices, nephews, relatives, and friends. In 1951, Pearline Woods and George Colton were united in holy matrimony. To that union, three children were born. Although Pearline would eventually become a single mother this status never interfered with her love and or the care for her children, family and extended family. Her mantra to her family was to love God, and love one another. She also taught her children that education was a must and that they were never to stop dreaming and becoming the best that they could be. She never wavered in her support for any person in her family and was central to the foundation strength and development of many. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church until her passing. She enjoyed many of the ministries in the church and each person that she met. She especially enjoyed going to the senior activities and the “Evening of Elegance”. She raved about dancing with Pastor J. and always came home felling like she was the queen of the ball. Pearline was also affectionately known as, “Polly” or “Granny” to many. Not just her family, but everybody’s family. It was not unusual to find children from families that were struggling in her care until they could return home. It was also routine to find her supporting a neighbor a friend or any person in need. Pearline once read a newspaper article about two homeless children she had never met. Guess where those children were that evening?... In her home. She always had an open door for any and everybody in need. Food, shelter, clothing, whatever she could give. She was loved and admired by many for her kindness and generosity. We her family are grateful for such a great living example of God’s love. During Pearline’s extended illness there were many who took part in her care and gave her what she had given to many for so long. She was grateful to all. Her sister-in-law Mary Woods was her special person to the end always making sure that nothing was missed. She has surely passed the torch to Mary now to carry on. Pearline went home to be with the Lord on the morning of July 7, 2014. She will be missed immensely by all. Rest in Peace!
