Mary Crowell

Mary Lee Williams Crowell, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend to many, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 27, 2024, while at Corewell Hospital. Mary was born on June 23, 1952, in Bishopville, South Carolina to Clarence and Elease Williams who preceded her in death. Mr. and Mrs. Williams instilled Christian values in Mary and her siblings. As a young girl, Mary and her sisters attended Jerusalem Baptist Church where they participated in many activities and sang with the young choir. Growing up, Mary attended the public schools of Kershaw County. After high school, Mary moved to New Jersey with her “big sister” Ellen. She continued her education where she obtained an associate degree. While in New Jersey, Mary followed the teaching and guidance of her sister and continued to grow and flourish into an amazing woman. After being in New Jersey for a while, Mary decided to spread her adventurous wings; she moved to Detroit. While here in the “Motor City,” she met a charming young man, Byron. After dating for a while, the lovebirds married and continued to reside in Detroit. Mary and Byron created a loving, welcoming home. Both of them enjoyed listening to and collecting albums from the 70s; James Brown, Temptations… In addition to enjoying these tunes and various genres of music, Mary enjoyed meeting people. Her charming laid-back personality seemed to attract people to her. Gardening, traveling, and cooking were also among her favorite things to do. Her all-time favorite enjoyment was spending time with her family. Even though there was approximately 735 miles between Detroit and South Carolina, Mary still managed to spend time with her family there. When she talked about her children and grandchildren, she beamed with pride and the joy in her eyes could light up a dark room. As infants, she spent time reading to them. As they grew older, she spent time shopping with them and playing games with them. She was the cool grandma. Mary was respected because she manifested authority and leadership. She was firm yet gentle. Her presence will be missed. She was preceded in death by her husband Byron Crowell; brothers Clarence Jr. and Donald; and sister Shawann. She leaves to cherish her memory and continue her legacy: three children Jonicah, Byron, Taryn; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters Ellen Nelson of Lugofh, SC, Dianne Miller (Richard) of Rembert, SC; one brother Clyde Williams (Doris) of Columbia, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
