Mrs. Mary Bell Cox

In Loving Memory of Mary Cox: Mary Bell Cox was born on May 17, 1945 in Shepardville, Alabama to the union of George Johnson and Lula Bell Sanders. She was the youngest of three children having two older brothers, George and John. Mary was a graduate of Tipton High School in Selma, Alabama and went on to earn her Associates Degree in Nursing at Highland Park Community College in 1974. Mary was joined in marriage to William Cox on September 28, 1974 at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. From this union, two daughters were born, Ramona and Regina. Ramona is scheduled to graduate December 2013 from Michigan State University with a Ph.D. in Sport Psychology, while Regina followed in her mother’s footsteps and is currently a Registered Nurse residing in Washington D.C. Mary and William’s union of holy matrimony was blessed for 38 years. Mary began her nursing career at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) in 1974. She started in dialysis at Hutzel Hospital in 1980 and continued her work at Harper University Hospital in the Hemodialysis Unit beginning in 1988. Mary received numerous awards during her tenure as a registered nurse, including Unit Nurse of the Year in 2003, the National American Nephrology Nurses Award in 2003, DMC Nurse of the Year in 2008, as well as countless additional awards. Mary retired earlier this year after 39 years of service to the DMC. Mary joined Dexter Avenue Baptist Church on April 23, 1967 where she was a faithful servant of God. She was a very active member and served in several capacities at the church that include Secretary of the Philadelphian Sunday School class, President of the Nurses Guild, and Treasurer of the Sounds of Inspiration Choir. Mary was a dedicated member of the Music Ministry and the Nurses Guild and served in additional capacities whenever her services were needed. She was well loved and cherished by her church family. Mary was a caregiver to many even beyond the walls of the hospital including saving the life of a complete stranger by providing CPR, an act for which she was acknowledged by the Las Vegas Fire Department. She always went above and beyond the call of duty and strived for nothing short of perfection. She was best known for extending compassion to others and always having a positive attitude. Mary was called home to be with the Lord on November 24, 2013. *Casket closed promptly at 10:30 A.M.
