Ms. Juanita Mixon Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Juanita Mixon was born August 14, 1940, through the union of the late Dolphus and Annie Austin in Grady, Arkansas. Juanita was the second of fourteen children and became favorably known as “Skeet” during her childhood. Juanita “Skeet” Mixon departed this life on Sunday, January 9, 2022, and has left her family, many friends, and acquaintances to mourn the loss of a remarkable pillar of the community. Juanita lived her life committed to Christ after accepting him as Savior at an early age and should be remembered for the love she had for her family and cherished for the bond of friendships that she established along the way of her life’s journey. Juanita was very proud of her family, especially of her younger siblings. She took her role as one of the oldest siblings very seriously and was the first to step-up or step-in to aid the family in times of need. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed sharing her home cooked meals with family and friends. Some of the dishes she enjoyed preparing were delicious desserts, corned beef and cabbage and the most delicious and mouthwatering dressing (just like her mother made it). Her kindheartedness and generosity will never be forgotten. Juanita matriculated through the Kennedy School System in Grady, Arkansas and graduated from Kennedy High School in 1958. After graduation she moved to Detroit, Michigan and began her career at Ford Motor Company and remained employed until retirement. In Detroit, Juanita established a network of family, and friends whom she loved dearly. Many regarded Juanita as a beacon of light. Oftentimes, family members would spend time in her home as vacationers or settlers. After years of residing in Detroit, Juanita made a selfless decision to return to Arkansas to give her late mother around -the- clock medical attention until she passed away. To some, this sacrifice may sound incredible; to us, it’s simply “Skeet”. Besides spending time with family and reminiscing about the “good ole days”, Juanita had a passion for traveling. One of her favorite trips and a memory she often shared was her time in New York where she toured the city and enjoyed her first Broadway Musical. She spoke of this trip often and proudly. Whether fishing on the banks in Grady, Arkansas, in the kitchen making her famous pound cake or touring the countryside, “Skeet” was “Skeet”; always loving, always welcoming and always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Juanita was preceded in death by her loving parents, Mr. Dolphus and Annie Austin, seven siblings, OJ Austin, Odell Austin, OZ Austin (Madeline), James Austin (Patricia), Nella Ray (Steve), Mark Hubbard, and Larry Hubbard (Jean). She is survived by five siblings, Mattie Thornton, Dora Scarver, Neaomi Mooney (Homer), Deloris Austin, who shared a home with her and cared for her until the end, Charles Austin & Ada A. Bailey, Three aunts, Maple Knight (AR), Ella Murray (CA), and Clara Whitehurst (CA), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. One very special nephew, Damon Austin (Charmaine), who she would probably refer to as her nephew-son. Juanita was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and a true friend that will be sorely missed and dearly remembered.
