Ms. Johnetta McLeod

In Loving Memory Of ohnetta Thompson McLoed was born August 29, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan to the late parents Helen and George. Johnetta accepted Christ at an early age. She was educated through the Detroit Public School System, and was a graduate of Northeastern High School. Education was always held to a high standard for Johnetta. She earned her Associate of Arts Degree from Wayne County Community College and later went to earn her Bachelor's degree in Health Services and Gerontology at Spring Arbor University. She was joined in holy matrimony with Clifford Jones Sr. to this union three children were born, LeeTeshia, Carmelita, and Clifford Jr. She later met and married Karlos McLeod, to this union one child was born, Timothy. As time progressed, Johnetta became the president of Detroit Direct Development LLC. In this business, over 100 lots were purchased within the new far Eastside Project. Even after all of the above accomplishments, Johnetta’s servitude and philanthropy work was nowhere near completed. From that point on Johnetta later became the Administrative Assistant to Councilman Clyde Cleveland from 1995-1997. In 1997, soon after being an assistant to Mr. Cleveland endorsed her to run for City Council. Keeping the community at heart, Johnetta also served on the board of directors at My Aunty Place as a community activist. She later established a Substance Abuse Center where she assisted over 1800 clients. From 1997 until her death, she served on the Advisory Board as a liaison for The Institute of Gerontology of Wayne State University. Johnetta was notorious for helping people in the community. She gave “EVERYBODY” their first job….well almost everybody! If you were at least 14, you had a summer job working for the City of Detroit. If you were younger, you passed out literature for her compaign. Either way, she made sure everyone who wanted to work had an opportunity to be employed. In September 2019, Johnetta retired from the City of Detroit where she served for over 40 years. Amazingly, 15 of the 40 years were served at the (Meals on Wheels) Detroit Health Department. After working in the health field, she later worked under the leadership of Mayor Dennis A. Archer in the office of The Finance Department Revenue Collections Unit where she successfully collected over Three Hundred Million dollars in tax revenue. It was in this position that she established many relationships with various business owners throughout the City of Detroit. She would always say, “I have friends who are multi-millionaires!!” After retirement, she became a Business Consultant, and established her own company as the CEO of Path to Power. When it comes to ministry, Johnetta has been saved and serving the Lord since her youth. She was baptised at First Union Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor E. J. Maye. Johnetta was a gifted, anointed, and powerful Gospel singer. She ministered in song at many churches, weddings, and funerals. At the age of 18, she started singing with The Heavenly Stars of Detroit. This group traveled all over the country. They recorded many albums in Nashville, Tennessee. She’s been on stage with many of the best Gospel singers in the industry. Going in a different direction in ministry, Johnetta left the group after 24 years. Johnetta’s calling shifted to empower women all over the United States. She assisted the Alternative Girls Organization with graduation items for 50 women from the ages 18 to 60. In addition to this, she collaborated with Pastor Trica Butcher Ministries in conducting a three-day Sisters in Ministry Conference held at the Masonic Temple in Detroit and on the Detroit Princess Boat. During this event we helped inspiring women position themselves for salvation, empowerment, and success in life. We provided makeovers, facial and formal attire for the occasion. Johnetta also used her “Gift of Gab” to become a producer of the internet Christian Talk Show, Faith Based Life Legacy. Her plan was to debut all of her talented and gifted family members and expose them to the nations. Johnetta was the Overseer of First Union Missionary Baptist Church. Having made her first stop in life at the age of 6 weeks to First Union, her connection for this church brought her back to her “FIRST LOVE!” This was the place where she first believed and received. She had a spiritual bond to the location. She shared the dream of the founder, and put forth efforts to make the dreams come true. She was willing to stand in the gap for the preparation of the groundwork for this vision. Under her guidance, First Union has established New Outreach Ministries that are geared towards helping the community. The Outreach Programs consist of Prison Ministry, Dan Charles Green Kitchen and Food Pantry, daily lunches, Mama ‘Nem Clothes Center, companion visits to nursing homes, and prevention of sex trafficking, and substance abuse. The movie “The Nail Shop” filmed a church scene in the sanctuary of First Union featuring the group “Detroit Now” and utilizing the church members as cast. Johnetta was a woman of many accomplishments. Nonetheless, she was most admired for being family oriented. Spending time with loved ones was the highlight of her life. Affectionately known as “Bobby” to her grandchildren, they shared special video chats, and business calls every week. SHE WAS ABOUT BUSINESS…..AND WOULD HELP YOU GET YOU SOME!!!! She enjoyed family reunions, Calhoun Christmas, and all of the other holiday gatherings. She never failed to attend with her designer glasses or shades! Johnetta loved God’s people and enjoyed helping them. She had a personal connection to people of all walks of life. From the homeless of the street to the chief of police. She had no respect of persons; she treated everyone the same. Johnetta departed this life on September 17, 2021 at 5:57pm. Preceding her in death were her parents: Helen Lockett and George Calhoun, two sisters: Connie Grundy and Vanessa Calhoun, and one brother: George Calhoun, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters: LeeTeshia Milton and Carmelita Turner; two sons: Clifford Jones Jr. (Sarah) and Timothy McLeod; nine grandchildren: Dejah Turner, Frank Turner Jr., Brandon Jones, Jalen Jones, Tyrone Turner, Raelyn Milton, Takon McLeod, Eric Milton, and Erin Milton; one special grandson: Krayton Garlon; one great-grandchild: Reign Turner; step-mother: Alta Faye Calhoun; seven sisters: Rena Calhoun, Shelia Akers (Gregory) Cynthia Calhoun, and Cassandra Flowers (Dwayne); one brother: Delano Calhoun; three step-sisters: Lechia Greene, Renee King (Robert), and Dorothy Blanche; one sister-in-law: Nakita Calhoun; one godsister: Natasha Bowden; best friend: Rita Watson. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
