Mrs. Gloria Jean Lewis

Her Journey: Gloria Jean Lewis, a beautiful baby girl was born to the late Clara and David Gatlin Sr. on August 16, 1943 in Logansport, Louisiana. Gloria was the eighth child of thirteen children born during her parents union. Soft spoken and kind, Gloria was a joy to the rest of her family. Gloria graduated from Logansport Rosenwald High School in Logansport, Louisiana. She confessed Christ at any early age at St. Peters C.O.G.I.C. where she played the piano and led the children’s choir. Gloria moved to Detroit, Michigan to further her education and later met and married the love of her life, Melvin Lewis in 1965. To this union, three loving children were born, Stanley, Tracey and Myron. Melvin Lewis experienced health challenges that confined him to a wheelchair for fifteen years. Gloria, with the strength of God, faithfully cared for Melvin until his death in 1999. Gloria’s great will and determination was exemplified as she earned a B.S. in Education and a Master’s of Science degree from Wayne State University while caring for her husband, raising children, working in the church and as an educator. Gloria worked in the Detroit Public School system as a Paraprofessional and once her degrees were earned taught Kindergarten and first grade for over 20 years. Gloria was a faithful member of Greater Mitchell Temple C.O.G.I.C. and served in various capacities including Sunday school superintendent, church mother, youth director, choir member, usher board member, announcer, prayer warrior and supporter of the ministry. Gloria truly loved working in the church and her commitment had an everlasting impact on many lives. Of all of her accomplishments, Gloria truly loved her children and grandchildren. She always gave the best advice and imparted tremendous wisdom to those close to her. Gloria was an awesome cook and the world was blessed by her famous German chocolate cake and banana pudding which were just a few of her specialties. Gloria had a great flare for fashion and loved shopping. An avid jet setter, she also enjoyed traveling. A few of her favorite trips included London, Italy, the Holy Land and several tropical cruises. Gloria departed this life on Saturday, March 25, 2017.
