Mr. Gerald Coleman

In Loving Memory Of Gerald Coleman: Gerald Coleman was born on January 30, 1950 in Detroit, MI to Willie Carter Coleman and Audrey Black. Gerald was educated in the Detroit Public School system, attending Eastern High School, and eventually receiving a General Education Diploma. After high school in 1968, Gerald joined the military and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970, and at this time Gerald decided to begin a career in healthcare. He earned a degree as a Respiratory Therapist. Gerald worked for a number of years at various hospitals and medical facilities around the metro Detroit area as a Respiratory Therapist. On the job, Gerald had a way of making his fellow co-workers feel comfortable through laughter, which was his gift. In 1983, Gerald was joined in holy matrimony with Juanita Cain, to this union one child was born. From the very beginning Gerald embraced marriage and fatherhood. He loved spending time with his family, and creating memories. In 2001, Gerald decided to further his career by going back to school for Nursing. He attended JTPA School for Practical Nursing where he excelled. He was named class president of the school’s last graduating class. Gerald loved life, lived it to its fullest, and touched so many hearts through his life’s journey. He enjoyed attending sporting events, and had a special place in his heart for his beloved Detroit Lions, he continued to believe in them every season. Gerald also had a passion for music, he enjoyed going to concerts, festivals, and outdoor events. Gerald was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2011, over the years he underwent a number of surgeries, chemo therapies and radiation treatments. Unfortunately, he was eventually placed on hospice in March, 2017. During his decline Gerald was determined to stay in his home, independent as he possibly could be up until the time of his transition. Even though it was a struggle, Gerald got his wish. He was transported from his home to the Veteran’s Hospital in Detroit on the afternoon of Monday, August 21, 2017 and departed this life later that evening.
