Mrs. Ernestine Lumpkin

Mother Ernestine (Johnson) Lumpkin, affectionately known as "Stine" was born on April 8, 1929, in Chatham Mississippi, to the late Eddie Johnson Sr., and Laura (Lockett) Johnson. Mother Lumpkin was the oldest sibling out of eight, and the matriarch in the family. Her siblings Ann, Eddie Jr., Eddie-Mae, Olivia, Ruby, Luvenia, and Willie-Mae, all preceded her in their home going. Mother Lumpkin accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior as a young child and continued to serve the lord throughout her entire lifetime. In her earty childhood, Mother Lumpkin was baptized at Magnolia Baptist Church in Chatham, Mississippi. Until the end, one of her favorite Bible verses was Psalm 23, which she often recited during times of adversity. After relocating to Memphis and later Detroit, she moved her membership to Burnette Baptist Church. and later to Tennessee Missionary Baptist Church. Mother Lumpkin participated in countless roles in the church over the years. She was on the Nurse's Board, Kitchen Committee, Pastor's Aide Committee, and many others. We were unsure what title to use for her. Sister Lumpkin, Missionary Lumpkin, or Mother Lumpkin. When it came to helping with the Pastor's Banquet or the Saturday morning prayer breakfast, she was enthusiastically involved. Now those of you who knew her, knew she loved to talk about Pastor Napoleon, Pastor Carruthers and Pastor Stott's. Not to overtook, she took immense pride in being the sole owner of her restaurant, "Old Southern." In the early sixties, Mother Lumpkin united in Holy Matrimony with her late husband, John O. Lumpkin. To that union was Rosemary who proceeded them in her home going, Pierce Jr., Doris, and Kay. Mother Lumpkin was recognized for being a strong-willed woman with her own set of rules, yet she still had a heart-of-gold. She loved her family and close friends and would give what she could to those in need. Mother Lumpkin (Ma) we will always love you dearly and miss you even more. Though it pains our hearts to let you go, we understand your battle was too far great. On September 22, 2024, mother fought no more and went to be with the lord. The Lord whispered softly in her ear, take my hand and come with me, for I will give you everlasting peace. No more pain and suffering, only my love to carry you from this day forward. Mother Lumpkin leaves to cherish her memory; a son Pierce, two daughters Doris and Kay. Her oldest and closest friend, and Cousin Johnnie (Red). Four adopted daughters Sharon, Pat, Obbie, and Donna. Two adopted sons Edwin and Hank. A host of grand-children (Mikala and Olivia), great grand-children, godson Kwame' Finn, nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
