Dr. Deloris Ann Berrien-Jones

Deloris Ann Berrien-Jones, also lovingly known as “Lois”, was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 24, 1953. She was the youngest child of James and Annie Boggs and had nine siblings. She grew up in a modest home of five brothers and four sisters, with a remarkable Mother that always found the means to take care of everything and everyone. Born into a large family, Deloris learned patience, how to love others, and developed a deep commitment to caring for people in any way she could. Her aspirations of becoming a doctor began at an early age. Deloris graduated from the prestigious Detroit Cass Technical High School in 1971 with honors. She was accepted into the premedical program at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor Residential College with a full scholarship. She enjoyed living in the East Quad dormitory, became a resident advisor, joined the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, and graduated with a biology degree in 1975. She continued to pursue a career in medicine by attending Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. Her graduating class in 1979 was the University’s second medical school class with African American students. Deloris then began her medical residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and her specialty was Internal Medicine. During her residency, she gained life-long friends, like Dr. Deborah Willis Fillinger, while doing rounds on the floor. She also married accomplished musician and entrepreneur Harold Stanley Jones, with whom she had two daughters, Jessica and Aubrey, and she cared for her stepdaughter, Elena Hope, like her own. After her residency, Deloris accepted an offer from Henry Ford Medical Group, with which she embarked on a long, distinguished career, practicing for 38 years until her retirement in May of 2020. She was beloved by both her patients and colleagues for her enduring kindness, and commitment to excellent patient care. During her tenure as a board-certified physician of Internal Medicine, Deloris received a multitude of accolades such as “Best Downriver Doctor”, the Focus on People Award, the Quality Expo Award for Staged Diabetes Management, the Governor’s Award of Excellence, Who’s Who in Black Detroit, the Humanitarian Service Award by Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, and many others. Her dedication to providing quality patient care catapulted her to senior leadership roles of Physician in Charge and Interim Medical Director. She also held positions on numerous physician advisory committees. Deloris often traveled with her daughters to medical conferences across the country to stay informed of medical updates and best practices to further improve her patients’ care. More important than her professional accomplishments, Deloris was a believer in Jesus Christ. She was a member of Brightmoor Christian Church for over 25 years. She raised her daughters in Sunday school and led bible study at home when the family could not attend church. Deloris loved the Lord and made sure her daughters knew the teachings of the Bible. In 1994, after her marriage ended, Deloris attended a classic car show, met and fell in love with John McCurdy. The two of them have been partners in love and life for 31 years. Deloris enjoyed traveling, sewing, writing, drawing, Asian cinema, and, most of all, spending time with her family. She leaves a legacy of love behind that includes her partner John McCurdy, daughters Jessica Parker (Damond Parker) and Aubrey Alexander (Ricardo Alexander), stepdaughter Elena Hope Sudduth (DeBran Sudduth), four grandchildren (Justin Mathis, Giselle Mathis, Eliza Alexander, Mia Alexander), seven living siblings James Boggs, Wayman Boggs (Joyce Boggs), Donald Boggs (Dorisel Boggs), Jacqueline Flint, Ernestine Miles (Kenneth Miles), Glenn Berrien, Barbara Boggs-Hughey (John Hughey), and an abundance of nieces, nephews, dear friends, and colleagues. May Deloris’ legacy of steadfast faith and unconditional love live on.
