Mr. Calvin L. Hawkins

In Loving Memory Of: Calvin L. Hawkins entered this world on November 19, 1946 in Memphis, Tennessee as the fifth child of Elijah and Pearlie Hawkins. Calvin, a devout Christian, accepted Christ at an early age and continued his Christian journey as an active member at New St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church under the stewardship of Pastor Walter K. Cheeks. Educated in the Memphis Public School system, Calvin graduated in 1965 from George Washington Carver High School where he developed his lifelong friendships with Walter “Gip” Gipson and Samuel “Sam” Allen proving that childhood friends cannot be replaced. Calvin’s employment started in the hospital industry at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, he continued in the service sector with the Army Depot but he ultimately found his niche in the automotive industry in Detroit, Michigan. Calvin initially worked at Ford Motor Company then moved on to General Motors where he was employed for 30 years retiring in 2008. Before leaving his beloved home in Memphis, Calvin met the love of his life, Crystal Bynum. They were joined in holy matrimony on July 18, 1968, and to this union, Calvin and Crystal, were blessed with two amazing sons: Vincent and Vicundre. Calvin had many hobbies and interests but the one that stands out the most is his love of cars. To say that Calvin loved his cars is understatement! A day would not pass without Calvin tinkering with his beloved cars and/or pampering his rare collection of matched box cars. Calvin, an avid sports enthusiast, loved rooting for the Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Lakers. Calvin touched many lives. He loved to entertain in his backyard while firing up the grill and grooving to the smooth sounds of his beloved Frankie Beverly making lasting memories with Gip, Sam and Kenneth “Shane” Hammond just to name a few. Affectionately known as “Skinny” or “Skinny Hawk”, Calvin was a handsome, charming, well-dressed man who loved his family and friends, traveling to family reunions and attending concerts. Whether dressed in a tailor-made suit or casually in jeans, Calvin exuded the essence of an all-around “cool” and well-respected man.
