Mrs. Shirley Ann Dorman

The Journey: In loving memory we celebrate the life of Shirley Ann Dorman, whose extraordinary blend of kindness, compassion, and loving spirit so greatly enriched the lives of her family and friends. Shirley made her transition peacefully and without fear on August 29, 2014, at William Beaumont Hospital. Shirley was born on June 12,1946 in Macon, Georgia, the first child of the late Lou Henry and Mattie DeRiso. Her parents moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1948 where she grew-up and met her soul mate and friend, Allen Roosevelt Dorman who preceded her in death on May 16, 2013. Shirley began working for the State of Michigan in the Department of Mental Health, as a Residential Care Aide in 1965. Her passion for nursing and caring for others led her to pursue her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 1988, where she continued working for the State of Michigan, retiring in 2002 after 37 years of service. Shirley's unwavering love and compassion for nursing would not allow her to submit to the basic concept of retiring. In 2002, she accepted a position as an Unit Manager at Four Chaplains Nursing Care Center in Westland, where she was admired and well respected by not only her co-workers, but her patients and their families as well. Shirley was an exceptional mother, whose commitment to her sons was remarkable. She poured her heart and soul into raising them to be strong independent men. Their love for her was unwavering. She was a loving grandmother and found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren. She was a beloved sister, spectacular mother and grandmother, an amazing aunt, loving cousin and fantastic friend. After the death of her mother in 1986, Shirley took on the role as the matriarch of the family, and accepted it with great pride and grace. Following in Mattie DeRiso's footsteps no matter what the season and no need for an occasion, Shirley enjoyed planning family gatherings and expected everyone in the family to be there. Having everyone all together is what she lived for. Those are the moments we will miss and cherish forever. Among Shirley's many endearing qualities was a rare sense of grace and humility. She seemed, at times, selfless, always quick to put her own wants and needs behind others. She had a heart of gold and loved to see people smile.
