In Loving Memory Of “Be still and know that I am God” – Psalms 46:10 Everlee M. Doughton, affectionately known as Peg or Peggy was born on a warm sunny Saturday. The date was June 11, 1927, in Tyler Town, Mississippi to the late Reverend Booker T. and Arcenia B. Magee. She was the eldest daughter, and her sisters knew who was in charge. “Train up a child” – Proverbs 22:6 Peg accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and was baptized into the body of Christ. She was a praying woman. You would often find her in quiet prayer and meditation throughout the day and night. Even as her health began to fail, her faith never wavered. “For everything there is a season” – Ecclesiastes 3:1 Peg relocated with her family to Detroit, Michigan during her adolescence. She was educated in the Detroit Public School system. She excelled in her academics, always at the top of her class. She was an avid reader and enjoyed reading mysteries, dramas, and novels. Often, she would read entire books in a weekend. “He that findeth a wife” – Proverbs 18:22 On December 9, 1947, Peg married the love of her life, George E. Doughton I. To that union, two children were born Caryl and George Eric II known as Rick. “Education is the key” – Peg Peg was a Licensed Practical Nurse for many years. After encouragement from her dear friend the late Congressman John Conyers, Jr. she furthered her education and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Wayne State University. She obtained her degree while working a full-time job, caring for her children and being a loving wife to George. “Blessed are the pure in heart” – Matthew 5:8 Peg worked at Zieger Hospital until its closing and then Michigan Osteopathic Medical Center in Southwest Detroit as a Nurse Practitioner specializing in pediatric care until she retired in 1989. “See the world baby” – Peg Peg loved to travel. She and her family went on annual summer vacations from Disney World, to the Painted Desert, to Los Angeles, California and many points in between. She traveled with her husband George visiting her godson Donny in Barcelona, Spain; she climbed the stairs of the Eiffel Tower and visited The Great Wall of China. She and George went on annual cruises and traveled every New Year’s Eve with close friends to a multitude of places. She and George traveled to the Kentucky Derby annually. “Live life to the fullest” – Peg Peg loved music and dancing. She would often sing and dance with her family and friends. She enjoyed going to Casino’s with her sisters Dean & Naomi and her daughter Caryl – once they went on a gambling trip to the Isle of Capri in Mississippi during a Spring snowstorm. “Take me out to the ball game - First and Goal” Peg was an avid sports fan. You could not talk to her while her games were on! She enjoyed going to Tigers game with her grandson Bruce. Watching the Lions with her son Rick and cheering on the Spartans and Wolverines with her granddaughter Anita. Her favorite team was Michigan. “Family is one of life’s greatest blessings” Peg was loved immensely by her siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She hosted many holiday gatherings and would cook amazing meals for her family. They would get together for barbecues and picnics and the family game “in-between”. “Honor thy father and thy mother, that you may have a long life ” – Exodus 20:12 Peg was a loving, caring soul. She cared for her parents and husband throughout their illnesses until they each transitioned. She truly gave her all to her family. Love. Hugs. Kisses. Sound advice. Words of encouragement. Day or night, you could always call Aunt Peg. “A bush and a peck” One of Peg’s greatest joys was her great-grandson, Bruce Deuce. She loved him beyond measure. There was hardly anything that he could not do at his GG’s house. She even allowed him to dance on her marble cocktail table until he got too heavy!! That table was his stage. “Because you loved me” Peg remained close with her son-in-law Mel. They had a very special relationship throughout her life. She always looked forward to his calls, visits, cards, and warm hugs. He always put a smile on her face. Oh how she loved Mel. “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” – John 14:2-3 On Tuesday, November 8, 2022, Peg passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter Caryl; son Rick; grandson Bruce; granddaughters Anita, Shanah and Sydney; great-grandchildren Bruce II, Daj, Gia, Tamia and Maia; great-great-grandchildren Royal, Noah and Nolan; sister Celia; son-in-law Mel (Cindy); sister-in-law Artelle Gandy; dear friend Helen Smith and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; and neighbors.
