Mr. Darryl R. Harris

Darryl R. Harris, affectionately known by family members as "Hochie," was born on December 8, 1950 to the union of Ned and Evelyn Harris (who both preceded him in death). He attended Detroit Public Schools and after high school he worked several jobs including one at a bakery. When he came home from the bakery his clothing smelled the house up with the onion roll scent and for years no one in the family could eat onion rolls. Darryl finally landed a job at Chrysler Corporation and bought a lime green Barracuda. After a few years at Chrysler, Darryl moved to Muskegon, Michigan where he married and had a son, Darryl R. Harris, Jr. Darryl was a man on the move. After living in Muskegon for a few years he moved to San Francisco, California to live with his youngest sister, Deborah. From California, Darryl moved to Columbia, South Carolina and finally planted roots. He joined the Jesus Movement Ministries and served as a missionary and deacon, then later joined Kingdom Vision Church of Columbia, South Carolina. He remarried and began a family with three boys, DeAngelo, Marino, and Michael. While in South Carolina, Darryl worked for the South Carolina Correctional Facility in Richland County as a Detention Officer for more than twenty years, and retired in 2006. After retirement Darryl's health began to fail. He had divorced, and then the LORD sent a guardian angel, Mrs. Roby Watson-Jenkins to care for him until his sister Camille and brother-in-law Willie could get to South Carolina to bring him back to Michigan in 2009. Mrs. Roby Watson-Jenkins was Darryl's supervisor at the Correctional Facility. Darryl's was a very sick man when he arrived back in Michigan and had to undergo many surgeries, but the LORD pulled him through it all. One of his doctors called him "the bionic man". When Darryl's health improved he joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and became an usher on the Senior Usher Board under the care of Bro. Darin Crite. Darryl's sister Camille, became concerned because he could not speak well enough with his voice box. Bro. Crite's response, "Don't worry, I got this, he will be fine." Darryl was so excited he worked both services 7:30 am and 10:45 am, on 1st Sunday and 2nd Sunday. Darryl truly loved New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, and the Senior Usher Board, he was very dedicated to his position as an usher. Darryl finally yielded to serve at the early service so that he could usher with his sister Camille. He also tried to participate in all of New Hope's activities. Darryl was not a member of the SCLEC ministry, but he tried to attend all of their functions. Last year Deaconess Martha Davison asked Darryl to be an escort for SCLEC's 1st Prom. He was so excited he bought a new tuxedo because he did not want to rent one. Darryl was also a member of the Heart Healthy Hustle Ministry to help keep himself physically fit. Darryl also faithfully attended New Hope's Bible Study Class at 12:00 noon every Wednesday. New Hope Missionary Baptist Church embraced Darryl and Darryl was forever grateful.
